For over 100 years, Hacienda Guachipelin has been a working ranch. The property comprises1600 hectares of land, of which 700 hectares are set aside for the conservation of the tropical dry forest; 575 hectares are used as pastureland; and 325 hectares are being reforested with species in danger of extinction.

Hacienda Guachipelin is a down-to-earth, yet comfortable hotel catering to nature lovers and adventure travelers. The hotel has 26 rooms: 18 standard doubles, 8 large economical "family" rooms and one simple single in the old "casona." All of the rooms have private bathrooms with hot water.

The dining room and reception area are housed in a building over one century old, part of the original Hacienda. The hotel is surrounded by lush gardens and has views of the volcano.

At the nearby Las Pailas sector of Rincón de la Vieja National Park, you can observe the park's constant volcanic activity. Some of the more interesting sites  include:  the "Little Volcano," or "El Volcancito," a small, constantly bubbling crater;  the "Water Paila," a very active crater filled with water;  the "Mud Paila," a crater filled with boiling mud;  the "fumaroles," a series of vents spewing vapor and sulphuric gases; and the colorful "Fumarole Pond," a tiny lake lying over numerous vapor and gas vents. All of this is just a short distance from the hotel.
