VOLCANOES GENERAL
INFORMATION
IRAZU VOLCANO
Irazu
is the highest volcano in Costa Rica with 3,432 meters or 11,257 feet.
The name Irazú comes from its indigenous origin "Istarú",
which means "Thunder and Earthquake Mountain." This volcano has been dormant
since 1965, but the fury of the last eruptions left it with a lunar landscape,
with a massive crater of 3,450 ft across and 1,000 feet deep, the bottom
of which holds an yellow lake.
POAS VOLCANO
Poas
Volcano, 2,708 meter or 8,883 feet above see level, contains a number of
explosion craters. Its main crater is one kilometer or 0.62 miles in diameter
and 314 meter or 1,030 feet deep. One of its craters holds a lake with
sulfurous steaming water. Poas is one of the main tourist attractions for
Costa Rica. You can observe the effect of past explosions in the whole
area.
ARENAL VOLCANO
Being
active since 1958, Arenal Volcano has shown daily explosions of rock and
lava. You will able to see colossal lava rocks that were spewed over the
landscape throughout the area. The grumbling of its inner activity can
be heard almost every day while at night you can actually witness the spectacular
liquid lava trail from the cone and see its explosions.
