Costa
Rica Offers a great variety of place for surfing. You can choose from the
635 Coast miles of the Pacific or from the 132 coast miles of the Caribbean.
Costa Rica is great for beginner or professional surfers. The best surfing
conditions are from November to March. However; you can ride the waves
almost year around.
Caribbean Coast Line
In the
Caribbean Coast, you will find the strongest waves, a good bit of them
are tubular and dangerous, such as Puerto Viejo (well know as Salsa Brava).
Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo, Cahuita, Uvita ( great left break) and Playa
Cocles are among the most visited places for surfing.
North Pacific Coast
At
the North Pacific Coast, you will find really good right and left breaks.
The best time for surfing here is from December to February. Playa Negra, well known for its right point break and tubular waves, Playa
Naranjo, Playa Grande, Potrero, Estero, Junquillar, Nosara y Puerto Carrillo
are well know in surfing crowds.
South Pacific Coast
In
the South Pacific, the best surfing goes from April to Number; however,
you can surf almost year around. You will find good left and right breaks
at Playa Manuel Antonio, Playa el Rey and Dominical. Further down, there
is great surfing at at Drake bay, Matapalo, Pan Dulce and Pavones (one
of the longest waves in the world, with 1.3 km); however, these and other
surfing spots are hard to reach and good bit of them do not have accommodations,
so camping is required.
Central Pacific
The
Central Pacific is characterized by its long friendly rides. The Best surfing
here goes form April to November and most of the beaches have easy access.
Playa Hermosa (frequent tubes and perfect waves), Boca Barranca (great
long left ride), Jaco and Damas (good rights and lefts) and Manuel Antonio
are the main
gathering place for surfers.
