Arenal volcano, located in Alajuela Province, rises 5,480 feet (1,600 meters) above see level. In 1958 and 1993 the Arenal Volcano's activity increased significantly. It had explosions of lava and rocks almost every day. Today, you can still observe enormous rocks being tossed high into the air from the volcano mouth, and you can actually witness the flowing red lava coming down the side of the volcano. The volcano creates hot springs that form the Tabacon river. The river forms cascades and natural pools in an exotic tropical garden at the base of the mountain. Near Arenal volcano lies Arenal Lake. Arenal Lake is ideal for fishing, windsurfing and more. It is located next to the Volcano and constitutes another of the multiple attractions of the area, including bass fishing, hot springs, waterfalls, hiking and Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. |
